Bronx Prep is located in the heart of the South Bronx, and our students come from the surrounding neighborhood. About half of the families in the community are Latino, often second-generation immigrants from Puerto Rico or first-generation immigrants from the Dominican Republic; the other half is African American. Eight-one percent of our students are eligible for free and reduced lunch. We use a lottery process to accept girls and boys entering fifth grade.
Academic Achievements
Each year, we administer the nationally-normed Stanford 9 exam to students in grade 5-10 (it is not available for grades 11 and 12). The test is a valuable tool for assessing how our students are doing compared to the national average and also allows for us to measure growth over time. As you can see, our students make significant academic growth as they progress through our program.

*Grade 9 “first fall” test was not given. Baseline scores for 9th grade are from after a year in the Bronx Prep program.
Within our high school program, the Regents exam continues to be the most critical measure. To receive a
New York
State
diploma, students must pass five content-based Regents exams, and our students are making remarkable progress in this area. It is with mixed emotions that we report that nearly as many of our 8th graders have passed the Math A Regents test as have high school seniors in our district. See chart below that details Regents passage rates for our students who have had 3 years of high school versus students in our district who have had 4 years of high school.

This past spring, our 11th graders took the SATs for the first time, and their average combined scores were higher than any
Bronx
public high school outside of the very selective Bronx Science, and to our knowledge we are the only
New York City
public high school at which 100% of students take the test.

As a public charter school, we are open to all students who apply and admit students by lottery. Bronx Prep teachers are committed to seeing every child succeed, regardless of past performance. In classes averaging 25 students, we provide the individual instruction and encouragement each student needs. An expectation of excellence is shared by teachers and students alike. Bronx Prep students understand that they must make a serious commitment to their education now if they are to reach the goal of attaining acceptance to and success in college. It is our aim to help them reach this goal.
