About Bronx Prep
- College preparatory middle and high school located in District 9 in the South Bronx.
- Located in low-income and predominately Latino and African American community in the South Bronx.
- Rigorous academic program operates on an extended-day and extended-year schedule.
- English Language Learners comprise 6% of the population, and Special Education Students (with IEPs) comprise over 10%
- Extensive AP course offerings in English Literature, English Language, Spanish Language, World History, Statistics, Calculus, Biology and Environmental Science. We plan to add offerings next year in the disciplines of economics, history, math, and Spanish.
- Activities include: Book Club, Boys will be Boys, Bronx Prep Performing Arts Academy, Double Dutch, ESL, Essential Crafts, Girl Scouts, Girl Step, Homework Help, Just Us Girls, Knitting Club, Latino Dance, Math Team, More Your Body, Piano, Advanced Placement Support, Robotics, Show Choir, Baseball and Soccer.
- Bronx Prep receives per pupil state funding at approximately 80% of what traditional public schools receive, leaving the school to raise nearly 20% of our operating budget.
Accomplishments
- Currently serving nearly 700 students in grades 5-12, admitted by lottery with preference to siblings.
- One of the first schools to be re-chartered for a full five-year term in 2005; re-chartered by SUNY Committee on Charters for a 3rd five-year term in March 2010.
- Graduated first high school class in June 2007
- 100% of graduates admitted to college over the last five years; 86% of alumni currently enrolled.
- Bronx Prep alumni are enrolled at 50 colleges and universities.
Partnerships
- Parents Association: Consists of an Executive Board led by Ms. Lilieth Ferguson; includes six grade-level delegates; vice-presidents partner with the principal and the Head of School to address schoolwide issues; meets 20 times per year; communicate with parents in English and Spanish regularly; parents chaperone school and college trips, and assist staff on Conference nights.
- Community Impact: GED and ESL classes are offered to the entire community, parents participate in community service with students at senior centers, preschools, homeless shelters, food pantries and teen crisis centers.
- External Partnerships include: REACH, The Institute for Urban Education at The New School, Bell Curves, City Year/Young Heroes, iMentor, Tribeca Teaches, NAACP ACT-SO, Computers For Youth, The Moth, and College Bound Initiative, the Usdan Center for the Creative and Performing Arts, the Ithaca College Piano Studies Institute, and Phillips Exeter Academy.
Honors & Awards
- Award-winning speech and debate team successfully participated in 20-30 competitions annually, in and out of state, at top colleges, universities and selective high schools
- Alumnus Chris Moncrief ’10, (Syracuse ’14) finished fifth nationwide in the Original Oratory category at the National Forensics League Championships.
- Bronx Prep is home to one of the most robust athletics departments among charter schools, and has received many awards in cheerleading, basketball and volleyball to name a few.
