Learning Enhanced

Students Paint Murals to Celebrate Dr. King

Twenty-two students volunteered on their day away from school to help honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. They assisted Bronx Prep teachers in the transformation of the Arts and Medical Departments at the Thomas Jefferson High School in Brooklyn. Members of the Bronx Prep community painted inspirational murals and learned about historical African American figures during their day of service.

9th Grader Ashli Barnes has participated in two other community service days during this school year. “I am happy that I was able to serve in Dr. King’s name last month,” said Ashli. “Community service is an important part of being a student at Bronx Prep.”

7th Graders Attend Leadership Conference at Bronx Prep

This past fall, the Instructional Leadership Team developed and executed programming especially designed for our 7th Grade Class to expose them to a conference setting, guest speakers and workshops.

During the workshops, students discussed specific learning styles, techniques for accessing extra support and strategies for increasing accountability for their own learning.

This was a unique opportunity to expose scholars to learning, self-advocacy and leadership.

Faculty Develop Community Circles to Support 9th Graders in Their Transition to the 10th Grade

Members of the 10th Grade Faculty Team have volunteered to sponsor each of our struggling 9th Grade Students to ensure their promotion to 10th Grade. The 10th Grade Faculty Team created Community Circles run by the 10th Grade Representatives to support these 9th Graders.

The Advisory Program is designed to engage students with 3 C’s – Community, College & Career. Each month throughout the spring will be devoted to Advisory/ Community Meeting activities which cultivate students’ ambitions in each of these 3C’s.

Arts, Athletics & Activities

Bronx Prep Presents Aladdin

The fall season had a successful ending with the middle school musical Aladdin. The musical was the first-ever student-directed performance for the Bronx Prep Performing Arts Academy. The Academy serves about 60 students spanning 5th-12th grades. The students are expected to grapple with sophisticated texts spanning poetry, prose, theater, musical theater and original oratory. The program rests on a model of peer mentoring and student leadership.

Winter Arts Assembly

2011 Newsletter Winter Assembly

Over 400 students participated in the annual artistic Winter Festival in mid-December, with notable performances from strings, winds, piano, guitar, band, choir and dance. Highlights included the spontaneous call-and-response version of The Lion Sings Tonight by William Bausch’s 8th and 9th Grade Iliad band (or “Odyssey-in-Waiting”) members, and the breathtaking ballet that represented the brand new direction that Kate Sedlack, artist-in-residence, has taken her dance classes at Bronx Prep.
